Lichtenstein

Lichtenstein
was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, his paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City and, along with Andy WarholJasper JohnsJames Rosenquist, and others. He became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the basic premise of pop art better than any other through parody. His work was heavily influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style. He described Pop Art as, "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting"

<From Wikipedia>

A central figure of American pop art, Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. In the early 1960s he broke with the precepts of the 20th century. In the early 1960s he broke with the precepts of abstract expressionism and hit upon a new concept of painting inspired by comic strips, advertising and mass culture imagery. The paintings sere an instant sensation, provoking both delight and outrage. Over the following four decades, Lichtenstein's work became internationally known for the  visual power of his iconic paintngs and his combination of 'high' and 'low' art.

This retrospective, the first comprehensive account of his art since his death, reassesses Lichtenstein's enduring legacy. His celebrated pop subjects are followed by series of Brushstrokes, Mirrors, Entablatures, Perfect/Imperfect paintings, as well as his explorations of art historical movements, from classicism to art deco to cubism. The exhibition closes with two of his last series, Nudes and Chinese Landscapes : they suggest new directions in a career that remained dynamic up until the artist's sudden death aged 73.

Room 1 : Brushstrokes

Lichtenstein's pop Brushstrokes are usually seen as parodies of abstract expressionism, the movement that dominated American art in the 1950s. Unlike the emotionally charged, slashing strokes of Jackson Pollock or Willem de Kooning, Lichtenstein did not present the brushstroke as the spontaneous expression of the artist's feelings, but rather as the result of a controlled act.
The irony is that mechanically reproduced image of the brushstrokes and deciede instead to paint them by hand.

Room 2 : Early Pop

In the 1950s, Lichtenstein struggled with an abstract expressionist style to find his own identity as a painter. Towards the end of that decade, he started to experiment with cartoon imagery, immediately setting up a dichotomy between artistic form and popular commercial content.

Look Mickey 1961 was a breakthrough for the 37-year-old Lichtenstein and set the course of his career. Based on an illustration, it is considered his first pop painting.

Look Mickey

Room 3 : Black and White

Lichtenstein used a black-and-white palette in this series of paintings of everyday functional objects. Yet the sources he drew from for Tire 1962 and Ball of Twine 1963 were not the objects per se, but stark graphic renderings that he adopted from anonymous illustrations in newspapers and mail-order catalogues.

Room 4 : War and Romance
